Vagaries of Choice
“Vagaries of Choice” is about the daily choices we all make. The woman balances two different birds on her hands.
The raven is a symbol of temptation. It is large and noisy. The parakeet represents the choice of leaning on and trusting God. Matthew 10: 29-31 says: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. . . So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” The parakeet becomes a stand in for the sparrow.
I chose the parakeet because of its beautiful color, like a little jewel. God’s love is like that jewel. In Deuteronomy 30:19 it says, “…I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to Him.” God gives us the choice: life or death. He also gives us the answer: Choose life!
The woman stands in for the ‘every person.’ Her garment is divided and un-whole and her hands are ‘disembodied.’ Until we make our choices, we cannot function in the fullness that God’s purpose has for us. If our mind is divided, we are distracted and cannot focus on what we are called to do in this life. Her hair is made of ‘the heavens’ to represent our need to have eternal concerns at the forefront of our thoughts in order to receive all that God has planned for us.
