Thirst is something that is addressed quite frequently in scriptures. It is uncomfortable or even life threatening. Christ promises to be our ‘living water’ that leaves us satisfied and brings eternal life. (John 4:13-14)
The woman represents those who trust in the Lord. She is resting, but alert. She is like the cactus that can survive in a parched and waterless land because her source is not seen with physical eyes.
Isaiah even speaks of a kingdom of righteous rulers that provide refreshment to others. So we are not only to receive the water of the Spirit from God, but we are called to bring it to others in need. (Isaiah 32:1-2)
