“Messenger” is a portrait of Joan of Arc, champion of France and a martyr for Christ. As a very young woman, she received a vision from God to help her beloved France go on to victory in its long-running war with England. She convinced crown prince Charles to let her help him. He agreed and she led the army to a victory at the city of Orleans. Later, she was captured by the English, tried for witchcraft, and burned at the stake in 1431 when she was only 19 years old. She never admitted to being a witch or renouncing her faith.
In this piece, her hair is made up of the ‘heavens,’ galaxies and stars, to represent that her mind what on the spiritual things of God. The heavens are dripping to show her anointing. Her body is made of a sunrise over a peaceful landscape to show her love for her country and the hope she had of its freedom.
This piece is in a private collection.
