One builder built his house upon the sand and one builder built his house upon the Rock.  The light and dark sides of the piece show the two choices.  The choice of the sand is dark and full of chaos. The sand sifts through her fingers.  The choice of the Rock is light and full of the plan of the Lord.
The woman represents the Saints in the Kingdom of God.  As believers, we have free will and make choices every day.  In Deuteronomy 30:19, God gives us the answer to choose life!  We are not perfect and will sometimes choose poorly.  That doesn’t mean God abandons us.  That is why her halo is intact, although tattered, on the sand side.  We are just one decision away from being back in His will.
The geological layers of rock are there to show the foundation we have in Christ that we can always stand on.
