Abiding Place

“Abiding Place” is based on part of the Lord’s Prayer: “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your Name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”  (Matthew 6:9-10)

The stars in outer space represent the heavenly realms.  The landscape in her body represents the earth.
In this landscape, there is a city or fortress on a hill in the water.  This is a symbol for the kingdom of heaven.  Water is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, and the sky and water are reflecting the sunrise.  On the shore, there are sheep quietly grazing. They represent waiting on the Lord, as our shepherd, to come.

Another aspect of this piece, is the placement of the earth and heavens.  The heavens surround her head, her mind, so this encourages us to meditate on heavenly, spiritual things, and seek to have the mind of Christ.  The ‘earth’ is her body.  Right now, our flesh is of the earth, but it is not the only part of us.  The hope for perfection in our spirit is abiding over her heart and is symbolized by the sunrise.  This innate longing for something more is part of every one of us.

Note: The calligraphic lines on the side have several purposes.  First, they are part of the artwork’s composition.  Secondly, they are reminiscent of the ‘writing on the wall from the book of Daniel in the Bible.  Third, they represent the language of prayer that connects our spirit to the Holy Spirit.
